AOA was a result of a merger between American & American Export Airlines in July 1945. AOA started operations over the Atlantic with DC-4s in October 1945, while awaiting delivery of 7 L-049s ordered in September 1945, The first Connie was introduced on the transatlantic schedules in June 1946. An agreement between Pan American and American Airlines had been reached in December 1948 for the Atlantic services and aircraft of AOA to Pan American. During the last year of operations Boeing 377 Stratocruisers were introduced on the services to London. Pan American took over all the Constellations but sold them subsequently to TWA starting in 1950.
