Operator: Cubana

Founded already in 1929 the company become Cuban owned in July 1954. 3 former L-40s replaced the DC-4s on their international routes. In the mid 1950s Cubana introduced live in-flight entertainment in the form of a 3 person calypso band and named it “The Tropicana Express”. 1954 saw the delivery of L-1049E, followed by 3 L-1049Gs delivered in 1956 and 1957. The take-over by Fidel Castro in February 1959, however, caused considerable impact on the company’s operations. With US embargo on exports to Cuba in October 1960, the Connies were soon grounded because of lack of spares. Cubana continued to fly with their Britannia and Russian built aircraft.
