In 1946 a L-049 was painted in Eastern Air Lines colors, and at the same time the airline placed its first order for Constellations – 14 Model 049s later changed to 649s. The first Connie was put into service in June 1947. By end of 1948 were 13 L-649s in service and flew 10 million miles. 7 L-749s followed in 1949 and the 649s were converted to 749A standard.
In November 1951 the first of 12 L-1049 was delivered followed by L-1049Cs in 1953 resulting in 48 Constellations and Super Constellations flown by Eastern in 1954. Super Gs were added to the fleet in October / November 1956. During that year and 1957 several Connies and Super Connies were leased from TWA and Seaboard to answer the demand of seasonal peaks.
